Jacob "Doc" Gunther is a modern-day Texas Ranger assigned to Company D of the Rangers, whose area of responsibility runs for 640 miles along the US-Mexico border, from South Padre Island on the Gulf of Mexico to Val Verde County (including Del Rio and Lake Amistad) in the west, the same distance as between New York City and Cincinnati, Ohio. NOTE: this also represents roughly half of the 1,241-mile border between Texas and Mexico.
In real life, the Texas Rangers conduct investigations into major violent crime, public corruption, cold case and officer-involved shootings, as well as overseeing the Texas Department of Public Safety's border security and tactical and crisis negotiation programs.
If you enjoy quirky characters from authors like John Sandford, Robert B. Parker, and Elmore Leonard, you’ll love the Doc Gunther & Pete Cortez thrillers.
"A shockingly plausible political thriller that transcends the usual worst-case-scenario about American border security." — BestThrillers.com
"Bill King has successfully captured the spirit of Yellowstone and transported it to South Texas. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED." — BestThrillers.com
This modern-day parable begins with the badly-splintered County Commissioners Court of a remote Texas border county shockingly declaring its independence from both Texas and the United States...and then immediately being formally recognized by the United Nations and nearly sixty foreign countries.
The resulting friction and conflict that follows between the state of Texas and the newly created Revolutionary Republic of Yucatec del Norte—not to mention roiling tensions with the U.S. federal government—will seem not only plausible, but frighteningly realistic.
Even though this political thriller is a work of fiction, it may not be as far-fetched as it first seems.
THE SALTY IGUANA is the second novel in the Doc Gunther Texas Ranger thriller series.

Doc Gunther is a modern-day Texas Ranger assigned to the Texas border with Mexico.
A rural Texas border community, mired in corruption, on a lark elects a twenty-seven-year-old woman with absolutely no law enforcement experience as the county sheriff. This throws a wrench into the plans of the local politicos and their cartel backers.
When the body of a young woman is discovered during the annual Javelina Harvest, an event that brings thousands of tourists to the rural border community, Texas Ranger Doc Gunther is sent over from Laredo to assist the Valdez County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
That’s when the pushback begins, pitting neighbor against neighbor—and everyone against the new sheriff—as the cartel and the local power brokers fight to maintain their corrupt status quo.
TROUBLE IN VALDEZ COUNTY is the first novel in the new Doc Gunther mystery-thriller series, which is centered around a modern-day Texas Ranger assigned to the Texas border with Mexico.
